1. TAX TYPES — Defining What Applies
Payroll → Taxes → Tax Types is your library of payroll tax definitions. For each one, you set:
- Category and Jurisdiction — what kind of tax it is and where it applies.
- Calculation Method — Flat Amount or a rate-based calculation.
- Default Rate.
- Whether it's an Employee Withholding (deducted from the employee's pay) or an Employer Liability (an additional cost your business owes, not deducted from the employee).
- Active/Inactive status, so retired tax types stay in history without applying to future payroll runs. Once defined, a tax type is ready to apply automatically wherever it's relevant.
2. TAX MANAGEMENT — Seeing What Each Employee Owes
Payroll → Taxes → Management shows, per employee per pay period: Gross Pay, Income Tax, Insurance, and other Deductions, filterable by Department and Period — an Employee Tax Details view for exactly what was withheld and why, without cross-referencing a stack of pay stubs by hand.
3. TAX SUBMISSIONS — Tracking Every Filing to Done
Payroll → Taxes → Submissions is a filing tracker: each submission has a Label, a Period Start/End, a Due Date, an Amount, and a Status (Pending, Filed, Paid, or Overdue). Add Submission records a new filing obligation, and the status view keeps anything from quietly slipping past its due date — you can see at a glance exactly which filings are overdue right now.

4. PAYROLL SUMMARY REPORT
Payroll → Summary Report rolls up Deductions, Net Pay, and Pay Count per employee across a chosen date range — the management-level view of total payroll cost and withholding for a period, without opening each individual pay run.
5. HOW IT CONNECTS TO THE REST OF THE SYSTEM
- Payroll Suite — tax types defined here are applied automatically during regular payroll runs and payments.
- Chart of Accounts / General Ledger — employer tax liabilities and employee withholdings post through the same guaranteed-balanced posting engine as every other payroll entry.
- Sales Tax Management — a separate, related feature for sales tax (as opposed to payroll tax) — see that guide.
6. WHY IT SCALES FROM SMB TO ENTERPRISE
Small business
Define a couple of tax types once, and every payroll run applies them automatically from then on.
Growing business
The Submissions tracker means filing deadlines live in the same system as the payroll that generated the liability, not in a separate calendar or spreadsheet.
Enterprise / multi-jurisdiction
Category- and jurisdiction-specific tax types support employers with more complex, varied payroll tax obligations across different regions or employee classifications.
