Bill of Materials / Recipes — the main screen

1. SETTING UP A BOM / RECIPE — STEP BY STEP
- Go to Production → Bill of Materials (or Recipes, for food & beverage businesses) and choose the finished Production Item this BOM is for.
- Define the Batch Qty this recipe/formula produces — e.g., "this recipe makes 50 units" — so quantities scale correctly whether you're running a small batch or a large one.
- Add each component: the raw material or sub-component item, and how much of it is needed per batch. If a component you need doesn't exist as an item yet, just create it without leaving this screen — including tagging it as a Service-type item (labor or a step that doesn't pull from stock) alongside ordinary stocked raw materials, so a recipe can mix "2 kg of flour" with "0.5 hr of mixing labor" in the same component list.
- Save, and this BOM is linked to the finished item for good — every future Work Order for it reads straight from this definition.
What a BOM defines
2. WHY IT MATTERS — WHAT THIS DRIVES AUTOMATICALLY
Once a BOM exists for an item, you never have to manually calculate "how much flour do I need for 500 units of this" again:
- Creating a Work Order for the finished item automatically reserves the correct quantity of each component from stock, scaled to the quantity you're producing.
- If Backflush is enabled for the order (see the Production Work Orders guide), components are automatically consumed the moment finished goods are received — no manual raw-material issue step at all.
- Demand Planning and reorder logic on raw materials benefit indirectly too — because consumption is calculated correctly off the BOM, your component stock levels stay accurate, which keeps reorder triggers on raw materials honest.
3. HOW IT CONNECTS TO THE REST OF THE SYSTEM
- Production Work Orders — every Work Order for a finished item pulls its component list directly from this BOM.
- Material/Ingredient Issues — when backflush isn't used, the manual issue step still consumes exactly the components this BOM specifies.
- Demand Planning — shows the finished item's list of Open Work Orders right alongside its BOM for context.
4. WHY IT SCALES FROM SMB TO ENTERPRISE
Small producer
Define a recipe once, and you never manually calculate ingredient quantities again.
Growing operation
Batch-scalable quantities mean the same recipe works whether you're running a 10-unit test batch or a 1,000-unit production run.
Enterprise / regulated manufacturing
A formal, reusable BOM is the foundation for accurate costing, consistent quality, and full material traceability back through Lot Genealogy (see the Batch/Lot Tracking & Quality Control guide).
